EMBRETSFOSS POWER STATION: SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS AND NEW ENVIRONMENTAL MEASURES

Based on an old power station and a heavily contaminated area that required a major cleanup, EB Kraftproduksjon and E-CO have designed a new Embretsfoss power station on the Drammen River. Sweco's experts from all environmental disciplines have developed an environmental plan and made provision for sustainable solutions.

ASSIGNMENT AND SOLUTION

In collaboration with the customer, Sweco has identified good solutions for cleaning up a highly contaminated waterway. A large volume of contaminated material has been taken to a special waste disposal site or covered with geofabric to prevent further environmental damage. Contaminated ground has been partially transformed into a grassy plain.

Good growth conditions for fish
To preserve the biological diversity of the river, our environmental consultants have designed a nursery stream for trout. The solution protects fish that swim past the dam and prevents the fish from being injured in the turbines.

Sweco's environmental experts clean up
We have utilised the full range of our environmental-technical expertise on this project. Sweco has identified optimal solutions for the river's ecological function and improved the quality of the river system. The project has cleaned up hazardous environmental toxins and contributed to improved utilisation of hydropower. This provides several gigawatt hours of clean, renewable energy. The result is that CO2 emissions have become lower compared to fossil sources of energy.
