ASSIGNMENT AND SOLUTION

Sweco will contribute to Elkem developing future-orientated solutions for smoke extraction when tapping and casting metal, for example. We carry out fluid simulations and CFD modelling (Computational Fluid Dynamics) to optimise solutions so that emissions are minimised, while also addressing the requirements regarding robust and maintenance-friendly installations in the demanding industrial environment.

More efficient tapping smoke extraction
A more efficient tapping smoke extraction will capture the smoke at source, ensuring that the smoke is not permitted to spread and disperse into larger smoke volumes. Elkem's "Doghouse" solution is a solution in which the capture effect is far better than with traditional solutions previously used in the industry.

Air curtain protects the working environment
The operators' working environment is protected through a specially-designed air curtain that prevents smoke from the process leaking into the work zone in which operators are located. This solution has been developed by our employees and implemented by Elkem, amongst others.
