E6 HIGHWAY SØR-TRØNDELAG: BETTER ROADS ENSURE FUTURE TRAFFIC FLOW

Several stretches of road on the E6 highway face major challenges when it comes to capacity. The volume of traffic indicates that there should be a single carriageway road with overtaking sections in rural areas. The Norwegian National Roads Administration – Central Region has asked Sweco to design a new carriageway with 2–3 lanes on several of the hazardous sections of E6 highway in Sør-Trøndelag.

ASSIGNMENT AND SOLUTION

The assignment concerns three sections of road of varying quality and width and with sharp bends.

  • E6 Ulsberg–Vindåsliene includes a zoning plan for a section of road of approx. 26.5 km, which includes three tunnels.
  • E6 Korporalsbru–Prestteigen includes a zoning plan for a section of road of approx. 8 km, which includes one tunnel.
  • E6 Vindåsliene–Korporalsbru includes a zoning plan and construction plan with multi-level junctions for a section of road of approx. 7 km, which includes one tunnel.

Better and safer traffic solution
The goal of the planning work is to increase traffic safety, reduce journey time and improve navigability. The plans have also made provision to move local passenger traffic to public transport and provide more predictable land use.

Sweco is carrying out preliminary surveys and studies before proposing concrete measures for the road network. Robust project management has been important in order to keep tight deadlines and communicate with the many different stakeholders.
