Structural engineering technology

Buildings and other structures are dependent on having lifelong security both above and below ground. Sweco's specialists know what is required in order to realise sustainable, functional building, industrial and construction projects. We adopt a multidisciplinary approach to each and every project and we ensure that economic considerations, the environment and people are taken into account in an integrated manner.

Polar technology

Sweco has been polar technology experts since the late 1960s, with more than 400 projects completed in Arctic areas. Our major customers are from the public sector and companies operating on Spitsbergen and the Antarctic.

The polar region represents major challenges with its vulnerable environment and extreme climate. Structures and buildings must be designed for the polar environment to ensure proper function. Sweco's professional experts have developed technological solutions based on knowledge of physical, mechanical and thermodynamic processes, interaction between humans, environment and nature. We have unique knowledge and experience of foundations on permafrost, using snow and ice as building materials, icing on port structures, the impact of freezing/defrosting on structures and building materials.

It is essential to understand how this climate effects a building's physics, energy conservation, water supply, waste management and infrastructure in relation to the major settlements on Spitsbergen and the isolated polar research centres.
